Superintendent Jette releases letter to MHS community regarding September 25th party allegedly involving Milton High students

September 27, 2020

Dear Milton Community:

It has come to our attention that an alleged gathering took place in Milton on Friday night. It has been reported that approximately 50-100 teenagers were there; possibly ignoring the rules set in place for social distancing and public gatherings due to COVID-19. At this time, we cannot confirm that the folks in attendance were Milton students but the fact that it took place in Milton is still concerning.

We as a district do not condone this type of behavior, and it goes against everything we have been asking the community to do to help ensure that our schools stay open in a hybrid model during this global pandemic. Milton High School Principal Karen Cahill sent a letter home to all families on Monday, September 14th encouraging parents and community members to do their part to keep Milton a safe place for all who live and work here and to help keep our schools open in a hybrid model as we head into a school year unlike all others. Now more than ever, in our continuous efforts to educate our students and make sure they are safe, we strongly encourage you to have a conversation with your student to let him/her know that this risky behavior is not acceptable and could have serious implications on the community as a whole.

Furthermore, we have met with the Milton Public Schools COVID Metrics Advisory Team and will be monitoring this situation in the coming days. Also, if you as a parent/guardian have knowledge that your child or any other MPS student was in attendance, we are asking that you share that information with school administration in addition to monitoring their health over the next couple of weeks.

This is a community effort and we need the cooperation and support of all! We need to keep our staff and students safe, and that can only be done if we all work together as one community where everyone is following the same guidelines put into place due to COVID-19 restrictions (wearing a mask, socially distancing, washing hands, etc.).

Thank you very much for your understanding, cooperation and continued support.

James F. Jette, Superintendent

Karen Cahill, Milton High School Principal
