Field and forest wagon rides at Brookwood Farm

Imagine riding in a horse-drawn wagon under the colorful canopy of sugar maples, all the while learning about the seasonal changes taking place around you. This fall, Blue Hills Trailside Museum and Blue Star Equiculture have teamed up to offer a unique naturalist-guided, one-hour interpreted horse-drawn wagon ride through the fields and woodlands of Brookwood Farm in Milton.

The horses are no ordinary horses. Blue Star Equiculture is a sanctuary for retired, disabled, and homeless working horses.

These are the draft horses that for centuries powered our farms, pulled our freight, and fought in our wars. They have earned a place in our heritage and deserve a place in our hearts. For more information about Blue Star, take a look at their website, www.equiculture.org.

Also, be sure to check out the recent Yankee Magazine story about Blue Star Equiculture, “The Promised Land.”

Rides are scheduled for the Sunday afternoons of October 16, 23, and 30. Rides take place on the hour from 1:00 p.m.–4:00 p.m. and are approximately one hour in length. The program fee is $20 for Mass Audubon members and $24 for non-members. Inquire about renting the wagon for exclusive use by your family or group. To register, please visit www.massaudubon.org/bluehills or call us at 617-333-0690.
