“Let’s Talk about Movies with Jean”

 – the film title is:  “Shoplifters”

(Japanese with English subtitles – 2017,

Rated R for some sexual content and nudity, 121 minutes)

Since most of you are probably watching a lot of movies at home right now anyway, please join Librarian Jean Hlady for a lively and fun talk about a chosen film.  You have between now and 5/19 to watch this one and it is readily available using Hoopla, a streaming service offered by MPL’s website, with your library card.  You just need to sign up for an account first and can even use Apple TV or another method to stream the title to your TV.

“Shoplifters” is recommended by actress Cate Blanchett from her list of film picks which “make a difference” and are ultimately uplifting. After one of their shoplifting sessions, Osamu and his son come across a little girl in the freezing cold.  At first reluctant to shelter the girl, Osamu’s wife agrees to take care of her after learning of the hardships she faces.  Although the family is poor, barely making enough money to survive through petty crime, they seem to live happily together until an unforeseen incident reveals hidden secrets, testing the bonds that unite them. This movie is warm, heartfelt, and engrossing and received the Palme d’Or in 2018.

Library Knitting Group – Ongoing this month:

Our informal knitting group is now meeting virtually and this adult program offers an opportunity for people to see each other, chat, bring a project to work on and have friends on hand to ask questions when they need help.  The members have been meeting on Saturday mornings at 10 AM (although dates may vary) and if you are interested in joining these fun get-togethers, just Email [email protected] and she will make sure you get on the list to receive the dates and Zoom meeting links. You don’t have to have your own Zoom account, and it’s easy to just click and attend.  Knitters and all other fiber artists are invited to enjoy some great company!

All of these online programs are kindly sponsored by the Friends of the Milton Public Library and are free and open to the public.  Please note if registration is required, and for more information go to www.miltonlibrary.org or Email Librarian Jean Hlady at [email protected] for questions. We hope to see you online soon at the Library!
