Adult programs to be held at Milton Public Library in September

During the month of September 2017, the Milton Public Library is offering some entertaining and educational programs for adults and families.  For those genealogy buffs out there, former Boston Public Library staff member and expert researcher Linda MacIver is back on Tuesday, September 12th from 7:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. with the first in a series of 2 programs this Fall. The one in September is part one and it’s called “Learn How To Research Your Family Tree” and pre-registration is required. Ready to take the plunge, but haven’t any idea how to start researching your family history? Register for this course and join in one of America’s most popular hobbies, second only to gardening.  Getting started is the hardest part!  In this program, you will learn the basic skills, especially how to stay organized from the beginning, to save time and frustration later on in your research. Learn the many things you can and should do in the comfort of your home. Registration for this first event opens at our website on August 21st. Watch for Part Two of this course, which is scheduled for November 7th, and see our event calendar for more details.

Tuesday Night at the Movies happens on September 19th starting promptly at 6:30 p.m. with a wonderful film called “Lion” which stars Dev Patel and Nicole Kidman. The amazing true story centers around 5-year-old Saroo (Sunny Pawar) who gets lost on a train traveling away from his home and family. Frightened and bewildered, he ends up thousands of miles away, in chaotic Kolkata.  Somehow he survives living on the streets, escaping all sorts of terrors and close calls in the process, before ending up in an orphanage that is itself not exactly a safe haven. Eventually Saroo is adopted by an Australian couple and finds love and security as he grows up in Hobart. As an adult, not wanting to hurt his adoptive parents’ feelings, Saroo suppresses his past, his emotional need for reunification and his hope of ever finding his lost mother and brother. But a chance meeting with some fellow Indians reawakens his buried yearning. Armed with only a handful of memories, his unwavering determination, and a revolutionary technology known as Google Earth, Saroo sets out to find his lost family and finally returns to his first home. This movie is rated PG-13 for thematic material and some sensuality so it is not appropriate for young children, and is 118 minutes in length. If you have not seen it, don’t miss it.

The first musical event for Fall will be a very fun and entertaining concert by a group called “Billy D & the Rockits Doo Wop Show Band” on Saturday, September 23rd from 2:00 p.m. – 3:00 p.m. as part of the “Porchfest Milton” festival. This program will be held on the front porch of the library (near the old front door side on Canton Avenue) unless is rains, and then it will be located in the lower level Keys Community Room. The band is a seven-piece group of talented and dedicated full harmony singers and musicians performing some of the greatest doo wop hits from the 1950’s and 1960’s. Billy D & the Rock-it’s prides itself in keeping doo wop music alive while stepping back in time, bringing to you an authentic look, including sharkskin suits, old fashioned microphones and more. Also a blanket would be helpful for seating on the lawn, and it’s a great place for a picnic. Come, wear your poodle skirt, and have a blast at this unique program which is great for all ages!

On Monday, September 25th from 7:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m., join tea specialist Lisa Tavakoli for an interactive workshop called “Creating Your Signature Blend of Teas and Herbs.” Learn the proper techniques and practices of handling your favorite tea and herbs to create a fabulous brew that you can enjoy, or share as a holiday gift. This event has a small materials fee and requires advance registration at our website which is www.miltonlibrary.org.

And finally there will be a co-author talk by Master of Wine Bill Nesto and Frances DiSavino, a student of Italian culture, about their important new book called “Chianti Classico: the Search for Tuscany‘s Noblest Wine” (c2016). The program will happen on Tuesday, September 26th starting at 7:00 p.m., and if you are a wine lover, you will enjoy hearing about this investigative, scholarly and detailed book. This new book has been awarded the 2017 Special Mention Award in the “Monographs” category by the Jury of the prestigious International Organization of Vine and Wine (OIV(), headquartered in Paris. Bill and Frances will relate the fascinating evolution of Chianti Classico as a wine region through the present day. Please join us.

All of these programs are open to the public and are kindly sponsored by the Friends of the Milton Public Library and the concerts are also supported by the Milton Woman’s Club. For more information, contact Jean Hlady, Adult Services Librarian, at (617) 698-5757, x. 3.
