Friends of the Blue Hills to host its first Peek-a-Blue Hike of the year

Special activities to be held at Peek-a-Blue Hikes kick off

On Tuesday, April 10th, the Friends of the Blue Hills will host its first Peek-a-Blue Hike of the year. These free, one-hour guided hikes created for babies and toddlers are offered every other Tuesday morning at 11:00 a.m. at Houghton’s Pond, 840 Hillside Street. Free snacks and drinks are provided. Although the meeting place is always the same, the hike route varies. Parents, grandparents, and child care givers are all welcome, and the hikes are stroller friendly.

There will be special activities at the kick off, including storytelling, songs and an “I Spy with My Little Eye” scavenger hunt with all children receiving a nature coloring book and crayons at the end. Peek-a-Blue Hikes are made possible by a grant from the Milton Junior Woman’s Club and will continue through mid-November weather permitting.

While news headlines bemoan the rise in childhood obesity and related health issues, many Milton children grow up with one of nature’s finest playgrounds in their backyard and yet do not even know it. According to respected researcher Richard Louv, nature offers a documented antidote to many of today’s ills, encouraging creativity; decreasing symptoms of attention-deficit disorder (ADD) and depression; increasing standardized test scores and grade-point averages; and improving critical thinking, decision making and problem solving. Parents who bring their children to the Peek-a-Blue Hikes frequently cite their desire to spend time with their children outdoors as the reason for attending the hikes.
