Help is still available: Mass residents can apply for winter heating assistance by April 30
With the April 30, 2025 deadline fast approaching, Massachusetts residents still have time to apply for the Home Energy Assistance Program (HEAP) – a critical resource that helps eligible households pay for winter heating costs.
This free statewide program provides grants (that do not need to be repaid) directly to heating providers, helping renters and homeowners keep their homes safe and warm. Households do not need to be on public assistance or have unpaid bills to qualify.
Eligibility criteria
- Eligibility depends on income, household size, place of residence, and other factors.
- Household income must be below 60% of state median income.
- You don’t have to be on public assistance nor do you need to have unpaid heating bills.
- Your local agency will determine if you qualify; eligibility and benefit information are available online here.
Program benefits
- Flexible eligibility: Whether you own or rent your home, HEAP can help with your heating costs—even if those costs are included in your rent.
- Covers various heating sources: The program supports a wide range of heating types, including: oil, electricity, natural gas, propane, kerosene, wood or coal. Heat also may be included in your rent.
- Direct payments: Payments are made directly to the heating company, simplifying the process for you. No need to handle bills or complex paperwork.
- Fixed amount assistance: The program provides a predetermined benefit, ensuring that you know exactly what support you can expect.
- Simple application process: Applying for HEAP is straightforward. You can apply online, by mail, or in person at a local agency. Our team is here to guide you every step of the way.
