The Milton Public Library announces adult programs for July 2025

During the month of July, the Milton Public Library is hosting some fun and educational events for adults and families. The retired Judge Dennis J. Curran will return via Zoom for a virtual talk to continue his “Great Trials” series. This one will be offered on Tuesday night, July 1st, at 7:00 p.m. and it is all about “The Trial of Leopold and Loeb: Inside the Criminal Mind.” This sensational case arose out of the murder of a 14-year-old boy, Bobby Franks, in a tony suburb of Chicago. The nation’s attention was riveted by the tragedy, as they asked why two sons of privileged and wealthy families committed this utterly heinous and completely unnecessary murder!  To join us online, please register using this link and then you will receive the Zoom code to attend beforehand: https://miltonlibrary.libcal.com/event/14639188   Please join us for another fascinating case study!

Then on Thursday, July 10, at 3:00 p.m. in our Keys Community Room, there will be an event called: “The Entertaining World of Fashion Headware: The History of Hats” brought to us by LOL Entertainment. LOL Entertainment is tipping its hat to a brand-new program that will have audience members head-over-heels with excitement!  Presenter Lori Pires will give a captivating presentation based on her own collection of 500 hats..!  She will actually feature 40 different hats in this program, from work hats to military caps, and ball caps to bonnets. Lori has been covering the world of headware for over 12 years, and so we ask you to consider coming to see what people (some quite sensible and others very eccentric and unconventional…) have created over the years to wear on their heads!  Advance registration is required to attend this program, so please sign up using the following link:  https://miltonlibrary.libcal.com/event/14222583  We would love to have you come check out this top-tier show which “brings the life to the party, one laugh at a time..!”

Our ongoing “Adult D&D” gaming program continues with staff Tyler and Kathy on Thursday, July 10, from 6:00 p.m. – 8:30 p.m. in the Conference Room. Calling all adventurers!  Join us for this free program, and no past familiarity with Dungeons & Dragons is required. DM Kathy is running a homebrew campaign using D&D 5e. Registration is required so please Email Tyler ([email protected]) to confirm a spot.

Also our ongoing “Booked for Lunch” event is happening this month on Monday, July 14, from 12 noon to 1:00 p.m., also held in the Conference Room. This is a “silent book club” which offers a half hour of socializing and eating lunch together, and a half hour of silent reading time. We’ll talk about what books we’re reading and share our top picks (and maybe the duds too). Participants should bring a bag lunch and a book to read. This program is for adults only. Registration is required and will open 3 weeks in advance of the date. Here is a link to sign up: https://miltonlibrary.libcal.com/event/14688249 This is a great chance to meet new friends and share ideas.

And one more monthly meeting – designed just for people under the age of 40 – is our Boozy Bookworms Club, which will happen on Thursday, July 17, from 6:30 p.m. – 7:30 p.m., and held offsite at Steel & Rye (95 Eliot Street, Milton). If you are under 40 and are eager to connect with fellow book enthusiasts, this group might be the perfect fit for you!  Staff Tory and Micaela will host a lively discussion over delicious food and drinks, and attendees purchase their own refreshments. Another event happening this month includes an in-person travel talk with World Traveler Barry Pell on Tuesday, July 15, at 7:00 p.m. in our Keys Community Room. The destination Barry will tell us all about is the “Panama Canal – Connection Between the Oceans that Changed the World.”  The Panama Canal is considered to be one of the great accomplishments of the modern world. More than an engineering achievement, the Canal united the world, fostering global trade and prosperity, as well as a fusion of races, history and cultures. The lecturer, Mr. Pell, traveled through the Canal on a four-masted sailing ship. In this program, accompanied by his photography, he will discuss the history, controversies, and ingenious design of the Canal. He will also take you along the Pacific coastal jungle to visit some of the wonderful wildlife creatures and plants of Panama and Costa Rica. Advance registration is required to attend, so please use this link to sign up: https://miltonlibrary.libcal.com/event/14287237  We hope you will join us!

There will be another Adult Yoga class taught by instructor Sheila Armstrong on Tuesday, July 22, at 7:00 p.m. in our Keys Community Room. This will be a one-hour gentle fluid experience where we will practice asanas (yoga poses) and breathing techniques to come into the present moment. Sheila will teach you how to create more space in your mind and body. Advance registration is required as space is limited, so please sign up here: https://miltonlibrary.libcal.com/event/14329685  Please come!

Our Monthly Wednesday Movie in July will be the film “Here” which stars Tom Hanks and Robin Wright. There will be a free screening of the film, starting at 6:30 p.m. in our Keys Community Room. This heartwarming film is “an unforgettable experience,” according to Brad Gilmora of ESPN Radio & CW39 Houston. Reuniting the director, writer and stars of Forrest Gump, “Here” is an original film about multiple families and a special place they inhabit. The story travels through generations, capturing the most relatable of human experiences. Told much in the style of the acclaimed graphic novel by Richard McGuire on which it is based, Hanks and Wright star in a tale of love, loss, laughter, and life, all of which happen right “here.” This movie is rated PG-13 for “thematic material, some suggestive material, brief strong language and smoking” it is not appropriate for young children. The running time is 104 minutes. No sign-up is required to attend, and we hope you might join us for an enjoyable movie in the cool of the Library!

All of these events are kindly sponsored by the Friends of the MPL and are free and open to everyone. Questions?  Email [email protected] or call Reference at (617) 898-4964. The Milton Public Library is located at 476 Canton Avenue, Milton, and we hope you will come visit us in the month of July to enjoy an event!
