The Milton Public Library announces adult programs for June 2025

During the month of June, the Milton Public Library has some fun and educational program offerings for adults and families. Our ongoing events include the MA Collaborative’s Online 50+ Job Seekers Group, which will hold their final virtual meetings this month. This career resource does not meet in the summer months, but will continue in the Fall. The June dates are Wednesdays, June 4 and June 18, both starting at 9:30 a.m. via Zoom. If you are unemployed and actively looking, underemployed, seeking a new career direction, re-entering the job market after a long employment gap, or recently retired and looking for your “Encore Career,” this free networking program is perfect for you! Remember: 85% of jobs are found through networking! Two talented local poets will read from their works on Tuesday, June 3, starting at 6:30 p.m., in our Keys Room. This will be an in person Poetry Reading with authors Dick Lourie and Mark Pawlak. Mr. Lourie has written several poetry collections, and his most recent book (2021) is Jam Session and Other Poems. He is a founding coeditor (1966) of Hanging Loose Press of NYC and also a talented musician. Mr. Pawlak joined Brooklyn-based Hanging Loose Press as an editor in 1980, and is currently the press’s managing editor. His poems and prose have appeared widely in literary magazines and anthologies, and have been translated into German, Japanese, Spanish, and Polish. Both speakers live in the Boston area. The Cookbook Club with Connie Spiros and Sara Truog will meet again this month on Wednesday, June 4, from 6:30 p.m. – 8: 00 p.m. in our Keys Community Room. Calling all cooks! This MPL club invites you to its next session and each meeting will feature a selected cookbook and members will prepare a tasty treat from the book to bring to share with others. This month the cookbook is: Cooking in Real Life by Lidey Heuck. Adult Yoga with Sheila Armstrong will commence on Tuesday, June 24 at 7:00 p.m., and Chair Yoga with Marianne Zullas is happening on Thursday, June 26 at 3:00 p.m. Both free classes are held in the Keys Community Room and advance registration is required. (This is the last chair yoga class until Fall, although regular yoga will continue once a month with Sheila during summer.) In these programs we will practice asanas (yoga poses) and breathing techniques to come into the present moment, and create more space in our minds and bodies. The chair yoga instruction is very beneficial for teenagers, adults, seniors, people in wheelchairs or those with physical disabilities or medical concerts. There will be another virtual travel/nature talk with Naturalist Joy Marzolf on Tuesday, June 10, starting at 7:00 p.m. via Zoom. This one is called: “From Roses to Redwoods: A Journey Along the Pacific Coast.” Oregon is well known for its rose gardens, but also for its beautiful and rugged coast. Travel through the Williamette Valley and through the coastal range to Newport and the scenic Oregon coast. From sea anemones in the tidepools to seals and sea lions hauling out on the rocks, there is much wildlife to see. You might even see gray whales in the water! Travel south to the Rogue River where a scenic boat trip can lead to bald eagle and even river otter sightings. This temperate rainforest is also home to coastal redwood, some of the largest trees in the world. Next, on Saturday, June 14, from 2:00 p.m. – 3:30 p.m., in our Keys Room, there will be an adult craft workshop called: “Paint the Night Sky” with Pop-up Art School. Come join us for a creative afternoon as the project is designed for you to paint a star-filled night sky with silhouettes of a hillside and trees. It’s amazing what you can create with four colors and some easy brush techniques! Milton resident Deborah Bingham is offering an in-person presentation in the Keys Room on Tuesday, June 17, at 7:00 p.m. to tell us all about her son’s book called: “Ripples of Hope in the Mississippi Delta: Charting the Health Equity Policy Agenda.” The author was David K. Jones of Milton (1981-2021), who was tragically killed in September 2021 in a preventable accident. In the book, Mr. Jones describes how a community-led, goal-oriented approach to creating health equity policies is needed and that everyone benefits when we ensure that all people can pursue a healthy, fulfilling life. Debra is the founder and CEO of the Institute for Perinatal Quality Improvement, LLC and is the mother of Prof. Jones. She has been carrying on her son’s work on this topic on behalf of David’s beloved family. No advance registration is required to attend, and other speakers will include Fifi Diop, MD, and Prof. Nicole Huberfeld who co-edited the book. There will also be a film shown at this event. The final June event for adults is our Wednesday Monthly Movie which will be held in the Keys Room on June 18, starting at 6:30 p.m. The title for this free screening is: “Twisters” which stars Daisy Edgar-Jones as Kate Cooper, a former storm chaser haunted by a devastating encounter with a tornado during her college years, who now studies storm patterns on screens safely in New York City. She is lured back to the open plains by her friend, Javi (Anthony Ramos) to test a groundbreaking new tracking system. There, she crosses paths with Tyler Owens (Glen Powell), the charming and reckless social-media superstar who thrives on posting his storm-chasing adventures with his raucous crew, the more dangerous the better. Please come watch these competing teams who find themselves squarely in the paths of multiple storm systems converging over central Oklahoma in the fight of their lives! This film is rated PG13 for action and the running time is 2 hrs, 2 min. No signup is required to attend our fun movie series.
