Broad Appeal: Jessica McDaniel talks about her photographic journey
About this episode:
This episode features Jessica McDaniel of Boston Baby Photos and the “Who I Am Project”.
Jessica is a Milton resident and owner and principal photographer at Boston Baby Photos. She’s spent the last sixteen years taking pictures of babies, families and expecting mothers in their homes all around the Boston area.
“I love what I do, every day, and feel so fortunate to have chronicled fun, crazy, quiet, energetic, and sweet moments in time for hundreds of fantastic families over the years.”
After studying photography as an undergrad at Connecticut College, and then spending a few years working at a marketing agency on the account side of things, Jessica earned her MBA at night through Boston University and graduated from there in 2003 ready to start her photography business.
Last year, for the 15th anniversary of Boston Baby Photos, and because Jessica is the mom of two tween girls, she kicked off a tween empowerment project called the “Who I Am Project.” At ages 10-12, kids aren’t children anymore but also aren’t quite teens. So last spring Jessica made it her personal mission to capture those lost preteen years. She takes photos of tween girls in their bedrooms – in their space – and then in addition to the photos, families connect her with other people who love their girls. Grandparents, Aunts, Uncles, Troop Leaders, Coaches…. and those people answer questionnaires all about the girls. She then combines quotes and the photos in a custom slideshow.
