Fall is a season where we prepare for winter and for giving to others. Sometimes, unknowingly, you end up spending excessive amounts on heat bills and gifts for your loved ones. With heating being used more often because of the colder temperatures and guests visiting, the increased utilization could strain your HVAC system – causing it to implode! What if there were a simple way that you could prevent this disaster and save instead? There is, and it’s as easy as changing your furnace filter!

Something so simple can’t solve a difficult problem, can it? It can! To prove why this plain idea can save you hundreds, is here to share about what happens if you neglect to change your filter.

What happens if you neglect changing your furnace filter?

The goal of a filter is to operate like a wide receiver in football and catch airborne contaminants. It guarantees great air quality, protecting your lungs from harm. A filter also enhances your HVAC, allowing it to operate at maximum. However, like the receiver, a filter will experience wear and tear over time.

When this happens, a furnace filter will not be able to fulfill its role, dropping the ball and allowing contaminants to seep through to your HVAC. Eventually, the HVAC will become cluttered with dirt, dust, pollen, pet dander, and more. This clog is like a blockage in an artery, causing the heart of your air filtration – the HVAC, to work even harder to push air throughout your home. This consumes more energy, affecting the environment as well as your pockets!

If left unattended, the HVAC will give out – requiring repair that could have been avoided.

What are the benefits of changing your furnace filter?

Now that we know how much of a negative impact neglecting furnace filter maintenance can cause, let’s cover the benefits consistent changing can provide.
Regularly replacing your furnace filter ensures that your air remains at a quality, clean level. Allergy symptoms such as sneezing, coughing, irritations of the eyes and skin can be eased.

Although purchasing replacement filters is a continuous investment, you’ll save money from being energy efficient. This simple action can help you save up to 15% off your current energy bill! In addition to this, frequently alternating filters will also help you sidestep costly HVAC repairs – saving you anywhere from a hundred to thousands of dollars.

With these types of benefits and savings, it’s easy to see why it’s so vital to replace your furnace filters promptly.

How often should I change my furnace filter?

How often you should change your filter depends on the type of filter you purchase. A cheap fiberglass filter at first glance may be more economical, but further investigation will prove otherwise. Thanks to the compromised make of the filter, it will not protect your HVAC as effectively. It will also clog up even faster, requiring more frequent changes.

A quality pleated filter may be more of a costly purchase but will supply a greater return on your investment. All the benefits (such as HVAC protection) and savings will be yours, and if you consistently change them at least every 3 months these will continue.

For home usage, it’s recommended to stay within the MERV ratings of 8 to 13. If you’re unfamiliar with the MERV rating system, it stands for Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value, and it’s the standard for how a furnace filter’s effectiveness is measured. The higher the rating, the higher the efficiency.
