How to properly dispose of a mattress or box spring in Milton

If you’re looking to get rid of an old mattress or box spring in the Town of Milton, it’s important to follow the proper procedures to ensure it’s recycled responsibly. Milton recycles all mattresses that are in recyclable condition, with materials like upholstery repurposed as textiles and metal and wood components processed separately.

Curbside pickup by appointment

The Department of Public Works (DPW) offers curbside mattress and box spring pickup every Tuesday by appointment only.

To schedule a pickup:

  • Submit a mattress pickup form online or
  • Call the DPW at 617-898-4900
  • Be sure to schedule by Friday at noon for pickup the following Tuesday.

What you need to do:

  1. Place the mattress or box spring in a plastic mattress bag, available at most hardware or home improvement stores.
  2. Attach a $35.00 large item sticker, which can be purchased at the treasurer’s office.
  3. Place the item curbside by 7:00 a.m. on your scheduled pickup day.

Drop-off option at the recycling center

You may also choose to bring your mattress or box spring to the Milton Recycling Center:

  • When: First Saturday of every month, 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.
  • Cost: Five (5) $4.00 stickers per item
  • Requirements: Items must be in a plastic mattress bag.

Important reminder

The town does not accept any mattresses or box springs contaminated with bed bugs under any circumstances.
