Demolition of former Hendries Ice Cream building postponed

The demolition of the former Hendries Ice Cream building located at 131 Eliot Street, Milton, which had been scheduled to commence on May 26, 2018, has been postponed.  The Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) is reviewing documentation submitted by the demolition contractor hired by 131 Eliot Street LLC, the owner of the property.  DEP has requested additional documentation from the demolition contractor.  DEP cannot approve the demolition work without that additional information.

As previously announced, the MBTA had planned to replace the trolley service with bus service along the Mattapan-Ashmont route for approximately one week beginning on May 26 while the demolition work is performed.  The MBTA’s service diversion is required for the demolition work to proceed.  As a result of the unanticipated delay in the demolition schedule, the MBTA has canceled its planned service diversion.  The MBTA will not reschedule its service diversion until the demolition contractor has obtained DEP approval for the demolition work.

Town officials are continuing to work with 131 Eliot Street LLC and the MBTA to move the demolition process forward as expeditiously as possible.  The Board of Selectmen and Town officials will provide periodic updates on this project, including rescheduled dates for the demolition of the building and the suspension of the MBTA trolley service.
