Brandy Fluker Oakley launches campaign for State Representative

Mattapan non-profit executive and Boston Public School graduate is officially on the ballot to represent 12th Suffolk District; Will hold virtual campaign kickoff May 9

Brandy Fluker Oakley, a Mattapan-based nonprofit leader and attorney, has qualified for the ballot as a candidate for State Representative for the 12th Suffolk District. A former teacher and education advocate, Fluker Oakley has gotten off to a strong start, submitting 210 certified signatures on April 28, well over the requirement to the Secretary of State’s office and leading all other candidates in fundraising.

Fluker Oakley will hold a virtual campaign kickoff event at 5:00pm on Saturday, May 9 on Facebook and Instagram Live.

“I am excited to officially announce my candidacy for State Representative in one of the most diverse districts in Massachusetts. This community is where I grew up, where I went to school, and it is where I work and worship,” Fluker Oakley said.

She continued, “As State Representative, I will take my experience — in our schools, our courts, and our community to fight for economic opportunity and small business creation in our neighborhoods, high quality education for our students, criminal justice reform, and equitable access to housing for seniors and families. Now more than ever, it is important to have bold leadership in government as we take on the COVID-19 crisis to ensure we thrive in our community.”

Fluker Oakley is a graduate of the Boston Public Schools. Raised by a single mother from the segregated south, she has dedicated her career to social justice advocacy, education equity, and progressive causes having organized her first protest in the third grade.

Upon graduating from Boston Latin School, she attended Syracuse University. As a member of the Baltimore Teachers Union, she taught third-grade before attending law school at Emory University. Fluker Oakley became a public defender with the Committee for Public Counsel Services in the Boston Municipal and Chelsea District Courts. Fluker Oakley observed those not served well by our public education system are served very well by our criminal justice system.

The systemic inequities she witnessed in the criminal justice system inspired her engagement in policy and political advocacy. Fluker Oakley is former executive director of Educators for Excellence and currently works at The Management Center training and supporting progressive non-profit leaders.

She served as a member of the Mattahunt Community Advisory Board and was active in Mattapan United. She is the founder and president of Delighting in God Ministries (D.I.G.), a faithful member of her church, member of the Dorchester YMCA, and an active member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority.
