Milton Select Board gathers to tackle packed agenda ahead of June Special Town Meeting

The Milton Select Board convened on Tuesday evening, May 24, 2027, at 7:00 p.m. in the Paul Kelly Community Room at the Council on Aging, 10 Walnut Street, for a comprehensive session that previewed key policy initiatives, fiscal proposals, and zoning amendments set to shape the town’s direction in the coming months.

Residents were invited to attend in person or virtually via Zoom, with public comment kicking off the meeting. The Board then proceeded to a wide-ranging agenda, beginning with the approval of a proclamation recognizing motorcycle awareness month.

Focus on June 16 Special Town Meeting

A major highlight of the meeting was the discussion and updates regarding the special town meeting scheduled for June 16, 2025. The Board reviewed six proposed articles, including:

  • Amendment of FY2025 appropriations to adjust the Reserve Fund.

  • Adoption of Massachusetts general laws (Chapter 59, Section 5, Clauses 17E, 22I, and 41D) to expand cost-of-living adjustments for property tax exemptions.

  • Zoning bylaw amendments, including changes to the Flood Plain District and East Milton Mixed-Use Overlay District.

  • A Planning Board proposal and a citizen petition concerning MBTA Communities multi-family zoning overlays, an ongoing issue tied to state housing mandates.

Progress on MBTA communities act & Town Counsel search

In tandem with zoning debates, the Board discussed the current status of the MBTA Communities Act compliance and outlined potential next steps, signaling an ongoing community dialogue around housing density and planning.

They also reviewed responses to the Request for qualifications (RFQ) for town counsel, setting a date for candidate interviews.

Community investments and school projects

The board moved forward on several funding and infrastructure proposals, including eligibility applications to the community preservation committee for projects like the Milton greenway concept, Milton landing boat ramp, and town center basketball court/park improvements.

In education news, the board voted on initial compliance certification with the Massachusetts school building authority (MSBA) and appointed members to the school building committee to guide future facilities planning.

Celebrating community & culture

Two significant recognitions were on the docket: a pride month proclamation and a request to install pride flags and decorative lighting at Manning park. Both items were approved, affirming the town’s ongoing commitment to diversity and inclusion.

Additionally, a one-day liquor license was granted to Roundhead Brewing Co. for the David Chesnut Jazz festival at the Eustis Estate on August 9, 2025.

Looking ahead

The Board discussed setting a date for its annual select board retreat, as well as the scheduling of the fall special town meeting. They also addressed updates on the animal shelter project and reviewed several past meeting minutes.

The evening concluded with reports from the town administrator and chair, followed by responses to earlier public comments.
