“Local History Book Chat with Will” to feature The Big House by George Howe Colt

Book chat to be held on Wednesday, August 22nd

Library Director Will Adamczyk will hold his “Local History Book Chat with Will” on Wednesday, August 22nd from 7:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. and please note the location for this program is the Upstairs Art Gallery. The book to be read in advance is The Big House by George Howe Colt (c2003). In this intimate and poignant history of a sprawling century-old summer house on Cape Cod, George Howe reveals not just one family’s fascinating story – but a vanishing way of life. Faced with the sale of the treasured house where he had spent 43 summers, he and his wife and children return for one last stay. This wonderful tribute to the eleven-bedroom jumble of gables, bays, and dormers that watched over weddings, divorces, deaths, anniversaries, birthdays, breakdowns, and love affairs for five generations interweaves Colt’s final visit with memoirs of a lifetime of summers. Run-down yet romantic, The Big House stands not only as a cherished reminder of summer’s ephemeral pleasures but also as a powerful symbol of a vanishing way of life. Please join Will for a discussion about a topic that often touches many of us as we grow up and leave our family homes.
