Milton parents to share their college knowledge with families in the college process

In the fall of 2014, Milton High School introduced a new initiative to assist juniors and seniors who aspire to be the first in their family to attend college. Called Share Our College Knowledge (SOCK), the program matches parents who have already been through the college process with families and students for whom the college application and selection process is particularly challenging.

This year, the group is expanding the number of students it will assist and is hoping Milton residents with college age or older children who have been through the college application process will volunteer to “share their college knowledge” to help other families.

SOCK pairs each student with a “college coach” who works with the student over the course of three semesters. Second semester juniors get assistance with preparing a college prospect list, taking the SAT/ACT, and are invited to visit colleges over the summer with other SOCK students. First semester seniors get help finalizing their college choices, working on their college applications, completing their Free Application for Student Financial Aid (FASFA) and meeting all the college deadlines. Second semester seniors get guidance in picking a college that is a good academic and financial fit for the student and family and have an opportunity to visit American Student Assistance in Boston for help in deciphering college financial aid award letters and understanding the true cost of college. SOCK coaches check in periodically with their students in between bi-weekly workshops held at the high school.

MHS guidance counselors refer students to SOCK, so any parent or student interested in SOCK is encouraged to contact the Guidance Department for more information. The group also has a website www.SOCKMilton.weebly.com. If interested in being a college coach, please email Anne Comber at [email protected].
