An interview with Sean Hurley from Accelerato group on how to succeed in business

How did you get started in this business?

After nearly 10 years owning and operating a Boston-based specialty food business, in 2009, I decided to start a business consulting agency helping start-ups in the food business best navigate their way to success. Almost immediately I discovered that all businesses regardless of industry have the same challenge; articulating what makes their business better and different from other businesses. It was at that point I decided to provide strategic marketing services in addition to high level business consulting.

What are some lessons you’ve learned while in business?

Surround yourself with people that are smarter than you, adapt to an ever changing marketplace and implement tools and processes that optimize communication within your company.

Have you always worked in this type of business or have you dabbled in other things?

Prior to Accelerato Group, I had key marketing roles at SpeechWorks International, now Nuance Communications (NUAN), iBasis, a KPN company (IBA), and ByAllAccounts, a Morningstar company. I also had the unique experience of playing cocktail piano aboard cruise ships in Europe, Russia, and South America. In addition to that, I had chef and management roles in the hospitality industry after graduating from Culinary School.

If you could provide advice to anyone looking to start a business in the area, what would it be?

Have a plan!

Take the time to write a high level narrative describing your business product or service. Understand what you are good at, and more importantly, what you are NOT good at and build a team of like-minded people with complimentary areas of expertise to help build your business. And listen to people.

Please describe your favorite or ideal customer.

The ideal client puts the business ahead of themselves, is open to new ideas, has and shares the company vision and has a sense of humor.

What is your #1 tip for other business owners?

Ensure that your company brand is working FOR you and effectively conveys your purpose and targets your desired customer.
