Authors Patrick Radden Keefe and Evan Hughes to speak on opioid epidemic Mar. 24

Event to take place at Pierce Middle School auditorium, 451 Central Avenue, Milton, 7:00 pm

Keefe’s and Hughes’s books explore the darker sides of the pharmaceutical industry, revealing shockingly true stories of corporate misconduct, greed and ambition that directly contributed to today’s opioid epidemic.

Empire of Pain: The Rise and Fall of the Sackler Family Dynasty, Keefe follows the excesses and hubris of the Sacklers at the helm of Purdue Pharma, maker of OxyContin.

In TThe Hard Sell: Crime and Punishment at an Opioid Startup, Hughes explores the illegal tactics and corruption that fueled the trajectory of Insys Therapeutics, maker of the drug Subsys. The books reveal that OxyContin and Subsys were found to be highly-addictive opioids that were nevertheless aggressively and deceitfully marketed. After the program, there will be time for Q&A and book signings.

This event is offered in connection with the museum’s upcoming exhibition “Opium: The Business of Addiction.” It is one of a series of programs sponsored in part by the Institute of Museum and Library Services, IGSM-249469-OMS-21.
