Stay business focused this spring – Small Business Corner

Warmer, sunshine-filled days are coming! Soon, the harsh, bitter cold of winter will be a distant memory.

Small business owners have the tough task of being understanding, while making sure that productivity does not slip, once the weather starts getting nicer and employees want to shake off that cabin fever. Maintaining a supportive company culture is vital to having and maintaining a strong employer brand.

We put together the following tips on how to help keep you and your staff focused on their assignments now that the weather is getting nicer.

Support time off

You will want to support the idea of your staff members taking their paid time off. Hopefully everyone will be mindful of your busy period, especially if that happens to be in the spring. If you have hired good people, you should not have to worry about them skipping out on their responsibilities.

Flexibility

Springtime is a great time to try experimenting with schedule flexibility. Flexibility should be possible for most jobs. You simply just need to figure out a way to work it in. If your small business already allows flexible schedules, encourage your employees to use their time to take advantage of the nice weather.

Scheduled breaks

Make going outside for breaks part of your workday. Work 30 minutes outside into your daily schedule and or suggest having meetings outdoors (weather permitting of course.) Even the experts say that 90 minutes is the absolute longest you should work before taking a break — even if the break is just for 5-10 minutes.

Stay focused

If you are worried about your employees getting distracted by nice weather, the worst thing you can do is to let the weather distract you! Employees will naturally follow the lead of their boss. Therefore, you need to stay focused!
