East Milton residents seek help in modifying construction of proposed six-story building

A GoFundMe has been established to raise money in an attempt to encourage the modification of a proposed six story building in East Milton Square to something more suitable to the neighborhood.

If the construction goes on as planned, the property, which will comprise 92 units on an acre of land and will be located along the third most congested a.m. rush hour traffic route in greater Boston, could break ground as early as October 28.

The money raised will go toward the bond required to anyone who appeals a housing project, including any that fall under Massachusetts’ Chapter 40B statute.

Nearly $10,000 of the $18,000 goal has been raised within the first few days.

Below are the details of the GoFundMe:

URGENT! Friends & Neighbors of East Milton Square

URGENT help is needed to protect the neighborhood of East Milton Square.

This is the LAST CHANCE to stop the construction of a 6-story residential building containing 92 units and only 104 parking spaces on barely 1 acre of land.

The developers could begin breaking ground as early as October 28th if we do not meet our fundraising goal.

This will be located at the current 4 Franklin St. office building extending down to 24 Franklin, 19-25 Bassett St. and 522 Adams St. (47,734 sq ft in total). We have been working with the developers and the Town for 5 years to build something that would fit in this neighborhood.

Unfortunately, the Milton Zoning Board of Appeals approved the development as is and we are now in a costly appeals process. How this affects you as a resident:

  • Public safety concerns. The neighborhood is already flooded with cut-through traffic and lack of parking. Because of this, our children (and all aged residents) are at risk. Basic traffic rules of stop signs and speed limits are already not abided by. This will also exacerbate the existing parking burden for local businesses and incentivize overflow parking onto adjacent residential streets.
  • Preservation of East Milton Square. Residents have worked hard with the developers over the years to have something built that would blend into our residential neighborhood. They have ignored our plea to maintain Milton’s character and small-town atmoshphere. At 66′ in height, this will shadow the surrounding homes around it.
  • The loss of Abby Park. A neighborhood staple would lose all of their parking and, therefore, would potentially have to close.

Help us continue our fight for smart development that will address the lack of affordable housing in Milton but will also be the right fit for our beautiful neighborhood and for East Milton Square as a whole.

6 stories is far greater than any other structure within the Square.

It is at direct odds with both the currrent residential and business design in East Milton Square.
Your donation towards this appeals process will help maintain the character of our town.

The funds will be used for a $15,000 bond required by the State of MA to delay development for further review and legal fees.

We ask that donations be made by Thursday, October 27th. Thank you for all of your help!
