Tips for deep cleaning your office space – Small Business Corner

Believe it or not, our desk areas are home to some of the dirtiest and most germ-ridden surfaces we come into contact with. For as long as the pandemic lasts, keeping a clean and tidy workstation is continuing to take on great importance. To help you get your workstation back in clean shape, we put together some tips on how to clean and disinfect some common desk accessories.

Game plan

Before tackling a messy desk, you will need a game plan. Check through stacks of paper for anything too important to get rid of, and be sure to shred anything that is sensitive. You will need to remove everything from your desk for a deep clean.

Cleaning your desk

Unplug everything first! Take the extra precaution of properly disconnecting monitors, keyboards, mice, desk fans, and other electronics before proceeding. Start with the stuff that is on top of your desk before tackling the assorted computer accessories and the contents of desk drawers.

Cleaning your laptop

Those lunch breaks spent eating lunch at your desk can really take their toll on your keyboard. You can use a can of compressed air aimed between the keys to blast away any loose debris. Then you can wash the keyboard using disinfectant wipes. To clean the laptop screen, use a fresh, dry microfiber cloth to avoid scratching the delicate screen.

Cleaning your headphones

If you wear a pair of headphones at your desk, it is a good idea to clean and sanitize them regularly. Once a week, wipe down the hard exterior surfaces using a disinfectant wipe. Be sure that the headphones are dry completely before using them again.

If you are using your desk every day, you should aim to thoroughly clean and disinfect it once every two weeks. Between the deeper cleanings, aim to sanitize high-touch points such as desk phones, keyboards, and a mouse once a day.
